GTA 6 Miami Marketing Push Triggers Pushback From Local Officials
Grand Theft Auto 6 real-world promotions across Miami face pushback from county officials ahead of the game's launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Rockstar Games is ramping up physical marketing promotions across Miami for Grand Theft Auto 6, but the initiative is meeting scrutiny from local lawmakers. The open-world title features Vice City and its surrounding region of Leonida, modeled after real-life Florida locations. Promotional efforts across the city have featured branded automobiles, a soaring Vice City blimp, beach umbrellas, and a prominent rooftop installation at the Kaseya Center tying into a Miami Heat collaboration.
The marketing campaign has sparked sharp debate within Miami-Dade County government regarding partnerships with a franchise centered on crime and violence. Commissioners such as Rene Garcia voiced objections about portraying the region negatively, while others opposed advancing the initiative. Conversely, supporters including Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and legislative sponsor Anthony Rodriguez emphasized the commercial benefits and the fictional nature of the game, defending the deal as a major economic partnership.
The county mayor previously approved a $975,000 promotion at the Kaseya Center under individual negotiation authority limits, with plans underway to explore further advertising deals at transit centers such as regional airports and shipping ports. Advertisements have also begun surfacing in other major markets like New York and Chicago leading into the title's planned debut on modern consoles.
