Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 Previews Adeptus Mechanicus and Necron Factions
A hands-on preview reveals strategic mechanics, narrative details, and December 3 launch timing for Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 factions.
New hands-on preview details have emerged for Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4, showcasing how the Adeptus Mechanicus and Necrons diverge from previously featured factions. The Adeptus Mechanicus campaign serves as the second chronological storyline, chronicling tensions on the planet Kronus between technoarchaeologist Potentia-Delta-9 and orthodox machine cultist Sek-Ix-23. The narrative gives players a choice in perspective between these two characters as they confront an emerging Necron presence, with earlier decisions from the Ork campaign subtly influencing enemy encounters.
Mechanically, the Adeptus Mechanicus field a ranged-centric army reliant on Skitarii units alongside specialized support like Kataphrons and Kastelan Robots. Their base-building revolves around the Noosphere network, which empowers connected buildings and turrets through relays. In contrast, the Necrons use a unique territorial expansion system where Nexus of Dominion structures blanket the map in a machine lattice to generate dominion, their primary resource. This territory-based economy allows Necrons to bypass contested nodes, though their frontline forces move sluggishly and rely on delayed dominance rather than early map control.
The preview also surfaced several performance flaws in pre-release code, including two-minute loading sequences on solid-state drives and freezes when mid-mission cinematics begin. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 is scheduled to release on December 3, leaving developer teams a narrow window to address technical rough spots before launch.
Announced release date: 3 Dec 2026
