Developer efforts to channel late-1990s survival horror are materializing in Derelikt, an upcoming sci-fi title slated to launch on PlayStation 5 on November 13. The project, which has been in production in various stages since late 2021, aims to emulate the visual fidelity and mechanical atmosphere of the original PlayStation generation while integrating modern design elements.
Set on the remote Von Neumann Outpost near Saturn, the story puts players in the shoes of a contractor dispatched to locate a vanished excavation team. Survival hinges on navigating failing infrastructure, interacting with untrustworthy survivors harboring personal agendas, and tackling out-of-this-world threats. Gameplay focuses on a mix of resource management, classic puzzle mechanics, character conversations, and fast-paced firearm combat utilizing standard, prototype, and alien weaponry.
Visually, the project incorporates period-accurate techniques to mimic 32-bit hardware, including hand-painted textures, vertex color lighting, affine texture warping, and full-motion CGI sequences. Players will also have access to toggleable visual options to adjust the retro presentation according to their preference ahead of its mid-November arrival.
