Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai has voiced strong skepticism regarding the long-term impact of artificial intelligence in game creation. Speaking in an interview with Denfaminico Gamer, the veteran designer suggested that while generative tools will inevitably inflate the sheer quantity of releases on digital platforms like Steam, the vast majority of these projects will end up as commercially unsuccessful ventures.

Sakurai pointed out that AI systems are limited to copying and recombining existing ideas rather than inventing entirely fresh concepts. He noted that simple puzzle concepts and system reproductions are effortless for algorithms to replicate, leading to an influx of mass-produced, lower-tier products that flood the market without offering meaningful novelty to players.

Contrasting automated generation with original human artistry, Sakurai cited director Fumito Ueda—renowned for titles like ICO and Shadow of the Colossus—as an example of creativity that machines cannot emulate. He emphasized that forward-looking creators who build distinct, unprecedented artistic visions will only become more essential as cloned and algorithmically assembled releases proliferate.
