The video game community is mourning the loss of influential level designer Richard Gray, widely recognized under his moniker Levelord. Studio Apogee Entertainment announced his passing, praising the enduring creative impact he contributed to the shooter genre, notably through his work on Duke Nukem 3D. Gray was 68 years old, and peers indicated he had been managing cancer over recent years.
Gray entered game creation relatively late in life after establishing his reputation in the Doom modification community. Hired by Apogee founder Scott Miller in 1994, Gray relocated to Dallas to craft levels for Duke Nukem 3D, becoming renowned for his playful environmental secrets and inventive geometry tricks. Shortly following the release of Duke Nukem 3D, he departed 3D Realms to co-found Hipnotic Interactive, which eventually evolved into Ritual Entertainment.
Throughout his career, Gray shaped many hallmark action titles, including Quake: Scourge of Armagon, Sin, Star Trek: Elite Force 2, and Counter-Strike: Condition Zero. Fellow developers, including John Romero and Cliff Bleszinski, shared public tributes honoring his mentorship, kindness, and foundational influence on modern environment design across the first-person shooter genre.
