Former Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan revealed that he deliberately avoids all online discourse, subreddits, and gameplay surrounding Blizzard Entertainment's hero shooter. Speaking in an interview with GameSpot, the designer noted that protecting his personal mental wellbeing prompted a strict boundary against following social content or searching for the title online.

Kaplan stated that he has not played Overwatch since leaving the company in April 2021. The separation was facilitated by earlier career experiences, particularly the difficult emotional process of stepping away from the World of Warcraft development team years earlier, which taught him that studio intellectual properties ultimately belong to the company and the community rather than individual designers.

Since stepping down from Blizzard, Kaplan established an independent game development studio where he is currently designing an open-world action-survival shooter titled The Legend of California. Kaplan emphasized that the future of Overwatch belongs entirely to the current development staff and its active player base as he focuses on his new venture.
