Itch.io to Introduce Search Filter Excluding Generative AI Content

Indie storefront itch.io is expanding its generative AI disclosure rules and introducing a search filter to exclude tagged projects.

Digital distribution storefront itch.io is expanding its policies regarding generative AI following a dramatic surge in daily uploads. The platform recently reported that the volume of newly launched project pages created per day doubled over the preceding two-month span, creating discovery issues for human-made creations.

To address this influx, the platform is preparing to roll out a dedicated search filter that enables users to exclude items bearing generative AI disclosures directly from their browsing results. Previously, the storefront relied largely on voluntary disclosures to regulate this material across its catalog.

In addition to the search toggle, itch.io is broadening its mandatory AI disclosure requirements. While game assets have required disclosures for the past two years, the mandatory tag will now cover tabletop games, books, comics, and musical soundtracks uploaded to the site.
