Global PC Shipments Drop 20% in Q3 Amid Memory Crisis and High Prices

Worldwide PC shipments plunged 20.1% in the third quarter of 2026, driven by memory supply disruptions and elevated hardware pricing.

Worldwide personal computer shipments experienced a steep contraction during the third quarter of 2026, falling 20.1 percent year over year according to findings published by IDC Research. Total volume plummeted from 78.5 million units during the third quarter of 2025 down to 62.7 million units in the same period of 2026. Analysts highlight ongoing memory and supply chain strain, intensified by surging demand for artificial intelligence servers, as the primary catalyst behind the market downturn.

The normal seasonal cadence of hardware sales was disrupted after vendors front-loaded inventory acquisitions during the first half of the year. This preemptive purchasing in anticipation of rising component costs effectively cannibalized volume from later quarters, leaving the third quarter starved for consumer demand. While distributors dealing with surplus stock may introduce temporary discounts, overall retail prices are projected to remain significantly higher than those seen in the previous year.

Major system manufacturers bore the brunt of the downturn, with Lenovo, HP, and Dell collectively relinquishing 4.2 share points. Despite HP suffering the sharpest individual decline, the top manufacturer rankings remained stable with Lenovo holding first place, followed by HP, Dell, Apple, and Asus. Industry analysts caution that deteriorating broader macroeconomic conditions could further suppress consumer demand, clouding market prospects through the remainder of 2026 and into 2027.
