Independent developers have introduced FX Steam Launcher, an open-source project hosted on GitHub designed to bring Valve's SteamOS environment to Apple Silicon Macs. Utilizing the ARM64 Steam Frame build of the operating system inside a virtual machine, the setup integrates Proton 11 and FEX to enable Windows gaming on macOS hardware alongside the standard SteamOS interface. Once the initial launcher is set up, it automatically retrieves the official SteamOS system image from Valve and manages future operating system updates directly.

The software requires Apple Silicon systems running at least macOS 15, though specific graphics translation requirements pose additional technical hurdles. Running DirectX titles involves translating instructions through multiple intermediary layers such as DXVK or VKD3D-Proton alongside MoltenVK or KosmicKrisp before outputting to Apple's Metal API. Notably, utilizing the KosmicKrisp layer requires systems running macOS 26 or newer. Users who configure the environment can choose to run the SteamOS interface in either windowed or fullscreen configurations without relinquishing access to the host desktop.

Third-party tests demonstrate varied real-world results depending on the title and display resolution. On an Apple M4 Max system, games such as Left 4 Dead 2 exceeded 200 frames per second at 1080p, while The Witcher 3 reached over 70 frames per second with some graphical foliage anomalies. Stellar Blade similarly surpassed 70 frames per second on high settings, though it operated at an 800p rendering resolution. While the virtualized method expands the playable catalog for Mac owners, compatibility and performance remain uneven across different games.
